چکیده

purpose: comparison of the results of visual evoked potential (vep) in time domain and frequency domain between multiple sclerosis (ms) suspected patients and normal indivisuals. method: eleven ms suspected patients with normal visual findings and 20 normal individuals were tested by vep. results were compared between two groups. results: the time domain results showed no significant difference between the two groups. results of the frequency domain showed that fmod value in the ms group (4.1±1.4 hz) was less than the value in normal subjects (7.9±2.8 hz) but, the number of peaks in power spectrum in the ms group (3.8±0.9) was more than the value in normal subjects (1.5±0.3). (p<0.001) conclusion: decreased nerve conduction velocity, nerve impulse blockage, and refractory period increase in ms may cause low pass shift in frequency spectrum that may lead to fmod decrease and increase the number of peaks in spectrum. these finding may be useful for early diagnosis of ms.

visual evoked potential study in multiple sclerosis disease

purpose : to demonstrate visual evoked potential (vep) changes in multiple sclerosis (ms) disease methods : a case series study of vep changes in forty-nine patients with definite, probable and possible diagnoses of ms referred to electrophysiology ward from january 2002 to december 2005. pattern vep was done for those with good visual acuity (va), and flash vep was done for those who did not h...

Visual and spinal evoked potentials in diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

The measurement of cortical evoked potentials generated by pattern reversal is a sensitive technique for detecting demyelinating lesions in the anterior visual pathways.1 2 Similarly changes in the somatosensory evoked potential recorded over the cervical spine3 have been found in many patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).4 We have assessed the relative and complementary values of these two te...

Visual evoked potentials in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

A three-year collaborative study was done on 96 patients presenting with signs of neurological dysfunction suggestive of multiple sclerosis. All were tested using Visual Evoked Potentials, with the final diagnosis not known to the tester. Patients with bilateral Visual Evoked Potential P1 wave conduction delays were more likely to have a subsequent diagnosis of MS, than those with unilateral de...

The Effect of Oral Verapamil on the Visual Evoked Potentials in Definite Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Introduction: Ionic channel rearrangements through the demyelinated axons or supporting media play significant role in remission of the neurological deficit in MS patients. In this study the effects of Verapamil as a calcium channel blocker on central conduction have been investigated through the evaluation of changes in P100 latency of the visual evoked potential. Method: This randomized doubl...

optical coherence tomography versus visual evoked potential in multiple sclerosis patients.

background:  optical coherence tomography (oct) is a non-invasive instrument, which can be used to estimate the thickness of the retinal nerve fibre layer (rnfl) and provides an indirect measurement of axonal destruction in multiple sclerosis (ms). the main aim of this study was to find out any correlations between p100 latency in visual evoked potential (vep) and rnfl thickness. methods: the p...
